Auckland Zoo
In February 2008 the Auckland City Council commissioned Sansom via Thorburn Consultants to find a solution to the problem of water loss from their three seal holding tanks.
These quarantine tanks and holding pools are used to keep all the seals healthy by enabling separation and close monitoring of sick seals by Auckland Zoo staff.
With Thorburn Consultants, Sansom developed a specification that:
- Found and stopped water leaks
- Provided an easy clean, smooth surface
- That was strong enough to handle 300kg sea lions!
Problems encountered and solved when the water was removed included:
- Urethane injection for leaks
- Concrete repair of coves
- Adhesion to PE inlet/outlet pipes
- Construction and placement of new fibreglass weirs
- Create falls in sumps and smoothing of surfaces.
This project was completed under trying weather conditions in a tight time frame. The result is a significant reduction in water loss and a seal-friendly environment.
Go and visit the Auckland Zoo sometime to see the playful and healthy seals!
