Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World

During August and September 2007 Sansom worked with Hawkins Construction in refurbishing the walls of the shark tank at Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World.

The walls are made of concrete constructed in the early 1900's.

The repaired material needed to:

  • Cope with high levels of sulphide contamination.
  • Resist salt water seeping from the adjacent tank.
  • Be durable with total immersion in salt water for the next 25 years.
  • Have a tight smooth surface as sharks rub against the walls.
  • Be applied in a 7 week programme.

An inspection of the walls was not possible, for obvious reasons.

MC RIM from MC Bauchemie (Germany) was chosen as the finish repair mortar.

The existing plaster had been in place since 1985. Delaminated plaster was removed and the surface prepared by Aquamax Hydroblasting.

  • The repair mortar was MC RIM.
  • MC Injekt 2300NV, urethane resin was injected into the areas of seepage.
  • 3mm of MC RIM F was sprayed on to the walls and trowelled smooth.

In addition to this Sansom:

  • Completed composite repairs to cracked structural precast members, Double T's that carry Tamaki Drive traffic with Tyfo carbon SCH-41 fibre embedded in Tyfo S epoxy resin.
  • Rebuilt damaged beams and reveals with Emaco 88c cementitious repair mortar.
  • Applied Aquaguard 101 water borne epoxy coating to the tank walls prior to placing rock walls.
